Al Culliton is a writer and bartender working in New York City. She is resident bartender for Basically, Bon Appétit’s charming website for the curious home cook. Her column, Happy Hour with Al, is published monthly. She is the general manager of the beloved Red Hook bar and restaurant Fort Defiance.
A lifelong historian, Al studied history and art history at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with a focus on medieval Europe. Since then, she’s been a barista, caterer, server and bartender, among myriad other things. Al loves poring over menus and cocktail books from bygone eras, visiting the New English countryside, and cooking for her partner, Perry, at their home in Brooklyn.
