Al Culliton is a writer and cocktail historian who has recently traded in New York for the beautiful environs of western Massachusetts. She is resident bartender for Basically, Bon Appétit’s charming website for the curious home cook. Her column, Happy Hour with Al, is published monthly. She is the former general manager of the beloved Red Hook bar and restaurant Fort Defiance.
A lifelong historian, Al studied history and art history at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with a focus on medieval Europe. Since then, she’s been a barista, caterer, server and bartender, among myriad other things. Al loves poring over menus and cocktail books from bygone eras, touring the New English countryside, and cooking at home for her partner, Perry.
